What is a Certified Legal Specialist? An attorney must fulfill several qualifications in order to become a certified legal specialist. They must be in good standing as an active member of the State Bar of California. They must have extensive experience in the specialty field – in Ms. Sullivan’s case, Family Law – and must pass a written exam in that specialty field. They must complete approved legal education programs, and finally, they must have their ability and experience in the specialty field evaluated by judges and other attorneys. Specialists are certified for five years and must be recertified by meeting special requirements similar to those for the initial certification.
